Private tuk tuk tour of Colombo, with Janaka

Colombo doesn't give itself away from a hotel window. It's in the noise of Pettah, the faded grandeur of the old Fort, the hush inside a temple and the sea wind on Galle Face. On this tour Janaka takes you through all of it in his tuk tuk, at your pace, with the stories that make the places make sense.

What you'll see

This is the kind of route Janaka plans for a first visit. Treat it as a starting point. If you'd rather skip the temple and spend longer in the markets, or the other way round, just tell him.

  1. Galle Face Green

Colombo's seafront promenade, where the city comes to breathe. Families, kite-flyers, couples, snack carts and the Indian Ocean rolling in beside you. It's busiest and best in the late afternoon.

  2. The old Fort

The old heart of colonial Colombo, a few streets of grand old buildings packed between modern towers. Janaka will show you the restored Dutch Hospital, now full of cafés, and the corners of the Fort that most visitors drive straight past.

  3. Pettah and the Red Mosque

Next door to the Fort, Pettah is Colombo at full volume: wholesale markets, handcarts, spice sellers and fabric shops packed lane after lane. It's thrilling and a bit overwhelming on your own. From the back of a tuk tuk, with someone who knows the way, it's simply brilliant. Look out for the red-and-white striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque rising above the street.

  4. Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake

One of Colombo's best-known Buddhist temples, crammed with statues, carvings and curiosities collected over the years. Just across the road, the small Seema Malaka temple seems to float on Beira Lake.

  5. And anything else you're curious about

Want to see the Lotus Tower up close, find a good cup of tea, or buy spices to take home? Ask. Janaka will fit it in where he can.

The final price depends on how long you'd like and where you'd like to go. Janaka will confirm it on WhatsApp before you book. Pay on the day, after the tour, in cash.

3 hours

Short on time? Colombo in 3 hours

Only got a morning? In Colombo for one day between flights, trains or a ship? This is the same tour, squeezed into three hours without feeling rushed. You'll still see Galle Face, the Fort and Pettah, and Janaka will add a temple if time allows.

The most useful thing you can tell him is the time you need to be back, and where. He plans backwards from that, so you're not watching the clock. If you're coming off a cruise ship, message Janaka with your all-aboard time and he'll tell you honestly whether the timing works.

Good to know before you go

What to wear

Light, comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. For temples, please cover your shoulders and knees, and be ready to take off your shoes and hat at the entrance. Some temples will lend you a white cloth to wrap round if you need one. A hat and sun cream help during the day.

Paying

Nothing up front. You pay Janaka in cash at the end of the tour.
