Colombo City Tour
The best first afternoon in Colombo. Galle Face, the old Fort, Pettah's markets and a temple or two, with the stories that go with them.
From LKR 8,000 (about US$25)
Most tuk tuk tours in Colombo finish before lunch. This one starts when the heat goes out of the day. Janaka picks you up in the late afternoon, rides you down to Galle Face Green in time for the sun to drop into the Indian Ocean, then takes you through the city as the lights come on. It's the Colombo locals know best: out, relaxed and eating.
From LKR 9,000 (about US$28)
In the middle of the day Colombo is hot, busy and a bit much. Then, around five, everything changes. The sea breeze picks up, office workers spill out onto the seafront, families arrive with kites and children, and the food carts start frying. It's cooler in the back of the tuk tuk, the light is soft and golden, and the whole city seems to slow down and go outside. That's the hour Janaka wants you to see.
Every tour is private, so the timing bends to you. This is roughly how an evening runs.
Janaka collects you and heads for the Fort and Pettah while the streets are still busy, so you get a feel for the old city before the light goes.
Then it's down to the seafront. Galle Face Green is where Colombo comes to watch the sun go down: a long strip of grass and promenade with the Indian Ocean on one side and the city skyline on the other. Grab a spot on the sea wall, try isso vadai (crispy lentil fritters topped with whole prawns) from one of the carts, and watch the sky do its thing.
Once the sun's gone, Janaka takes you back through the city in the cool evening air. The old Fort buildings are lit up, the Lotus Tower glows in changing colours above the skyline, and the evening food stalls are in full swing. If you're hungry, he'll know where to stop for kottu, and you'll hear it before you see it, from the clatter of the blades on the hot plate.
Evening & Sunset Tour
From LKR 9,000 (about US$28)
Janaka confirms the final price on WhatsApp before you book. Pay on the day, after the tour, in cash.
On honeymoon, celebrating an anniversary, or just want one evening in Colombo that feels a little special? The sunset tour is already private, so it's just the two of you in the back of the tuk tuk and Janaka up front. Tell him what you're celebrating and he'll shape the evening around it: a quieter stretch of the seafront for the sunset, a slower ride home through the lit-up city, and a stop to eat somewhere locals love.
Colombo is close to the equator, so the sun sets at about the same time all year, a little either side of six in the evening. Janaka will tell you the best pickup time for your date when you message.
Some evenings, especially in the rainy months, the sunset hides behind cloud. The seafront, the food and the city at night are still worth it.
Nothing up front. Pay Janaka in cash after the tour.
Tap the button. The message already says "Evening & Sunset Tour"; add your date and how many of you.
Janaka replies with a pickup time and the price.
He'll confirm with you on WhatsApp the day before.
Enjoy the evening, then pay in cash.
